Observation of the Daihatsu 8DK32 Crankshaft Before Repair
i) During visual inspection, it was observed that the bearing of crankpin No. 07 was severely damaged, and bearing material had accumulated in the engine sump.
ii) After opening the connecting rod, the bearing was found to be badly damaged, and crankpin No. 07 was embedded with bearing material.
iii) The bearing material was carefully removed, and crankpin No. 07 was inspected for taper and ovality.

The ovality of 1.18 mm was well beyond permissible limits, confirming the necessity of immediate corrective action.
Action Taken by RA Power Solutions
Grinding of crankpin No. 07 was initiated using a specially designed onsite crankshaft grinding machine.
- Initially, based on the ovality, an undersize of 1.50 mm was estimated.
- Upon further evaluation during grinding, it was decided to reduce the crankpin diameter by an additional 0.50 mm.
- A total undersize of 2.00 mm was therefore maintained to ensure proper geometry and bearing fit.
- Controlled material removal was performed to restore the crankpin profile and surface finish.
- All safety and operational protocols were strictly followed while carrying out the repair during sailing conditions.
