Crankshaft Grinding Machine | Onsite Cylindrical Shaft Grinding Machine
We manufacture an onsite cylindrical shaft grinding machine designed for in-situ grinding and polishing of rotor shafts, turbine shafts, alternator shafts, pump shafts, propulsion shafts, drive shafts, and other cylindrical shafts. The machine has been developed for situations where removing the shaft or dismantling the equipment is either impractical or would result in extended vessel or plant downtime.
From our experience working onboard vessels and at industrial sites, avoiding unnecessary disassembly is often the biggest advantage. During voyage repairs, port stays, or scheduled maintenance, we can transport the machine to the location, install it directly on the equipment, and carry out grinding and polishing without removing the shaft from its housing. This approach significantly reduces repair time while maintaining the required machining accuracy.
Features of the Onsite Cylindrical Shaft Grinding Machine
The onsite grinding machine is designed for portability and precision machining in marine and industrial environments.
Key Features
- Lightweight construction for easy transportation to the work site.
- Designed for in-situ grinding and polishing without dismantling the main equipment.
- Suitable for rotor shafts, turbine shafts, alternator shafts, pump shafts, propulsion shafts, drive shafts, and all types of cylindrical shafts.
- Portable setup for onboard vessels, offshore installations, power plants, and industrial applications.
- Reduces vessel downtime by eliminating unnecessary shaft removal.
Pre-Inspection Before In-Situ Shaft Grinding
Before any grinding work begins, we always complete a detailed diagnostic inspection to establish the condition of the shaft and determine whether it is suitable for machining within OEM limits.
Diagnostic Inspection Includes
- Dimensional measurement of the shaft.
- Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) for crack detection.
- Alignment check to verify shaft straightness.
- Hardness testing to identify hot spots caused by localized overheating.
In our work, we also verify ovality, taper, journal run-out, fillet radius condition, OEM regrind limits, and the required Ra surface finish, as these directly influence bearing performance and hydrodynamic lubrication after the repair. Where applicable, repair procedures comply with the requirements of DNV, ABS, and Lloyd's Register.
In-Situ Grinding and Polishing Process
Our patented orbital grinding equipment rotates around the damaged crankpin or journal while using the journal radii as the reference datum. This arrangement allows us to machine the component accurately without removing the crankshaft from the engine.
Grinding to OEM Specifications
Grinding and polishing of crankshaft pins and crankshaft main journals are completed to the original engine manufacturer's (OEM) tolerance and surface finish specifications.
Maintaining the specified geometry, journal roundness, and surface finish is essential for proper hydrodynamic lubrication, bearing contact, and long-term equipment reliability.
Applications of the Cylindrical Shaft Grinding Machine
The onsite shaft grinding machine is suitable for repairing and restoring the following:
- Rotor Shafts
- Turbine Shafts
- Alternator Shafts
- Pump Shafts
- Drive Shafts
- Propulsion Shafts
- Crankshaft Pins
